First day of vacation, and we slept in – Eddie to 9 and me to 11. Budapest time, that is, which means that he was roaming around just after 3 this morning, and I got to sleep in until 5. Since we're still home and still doing things, that means we had lots of time.
It's slow at the courthouse right now, and that's good, but I still had blocked out from Wednesday on. This is good, since I had things changing right up to 5:00 yesterday and ended up over there doing things until about 3:00 yesterday. That, of course, meant that paper had to be generated today and it can't wait for two weeks. Thus, there's mail to go out today. In the vacation spirit, though, we've resolved not to check the mail, and office e-mail and phones are out of bounds for both of us as of 5:00 yesterday afternoon.
After all, it's vacation. Not "work from another place".
Packing for two weeks for two adult males is something of an adventure. We can get it down pretty light, but our goal is to avoid having to figure out some type of foreign coin laundry if at all possible. The fear of depositing $400 to do a load of wash is strong in my mind, especially since we're not just converting to Euros this time -- Hungary and the Czech Republic still use their own money, although Austria will accept Euros. Fortunately, most places take debit cards and they do that conversion for us. I did invest in a $2 disposable calculator yesterday after I realized suddenly that we won't have cell phones since American phones don't work in Europe.
The hard part of travelling isn't necessarily the packing and schlepping through the airport and stuff -- it's getting ready for the things that you wouldn't normally associate with the trip. This morning, I was out just after dawn cleaning all the construction crud out of the back seat of my truck so that Benita can take it to pick up a couch in Forest City while we're gone. Those of you familiar with the back seat of my pickup know that this was no small task. The Smithsonian has not responded to my offer of treasures from such an archeological dig, so most of it hit the big green bin.
The problem with getting up so early is that no restaurants serve lunch until much later in the day. Breakfast was hours ago; I'm ready for something else now, and it's not 9:00 yet.
OK, there's errands to run, packing to finish and things to do. We're off to the airport a little after noon in order to meet the FAA's guidelines for travel. More later.
